Biennial postal convention begins today

The delegates represent some 312,000 members of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
The 109-year-old union represents city delivery carriers employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
Union president Vincent Sombrotto is presiding over the convention, and gave the keynote address.
Also scheduled to speak are Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and John Wilhelm, president-elect of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union.
Delegates will also discuss union proposals for the upcoming negotiations for a new national contract and the role of letter carriers in the future of the postal service.
The union's current contract expires Nov. 20.
