* DESERT QUILTERS -- The Desert Quilters of Nevada presented quilts, wall hangings and pillows for the Ronald McDonald House. For more information about Desert Quilters, call 655-8213.
* PITCHING CONTEST -- Astoria Homes President Tom McCormick won a pitching contest before a recent Las Vegas Stars baseball game. As part of his prize, a donation of $1,000 was pledged in his name to the charity of his choice, Catholic Charities Child Care Center.
* ON TARGET -- Target Stores recently awarded $1.6 million to high school seniors nationwide. Approximately 1,600 students each will receive a $1,000 All-Around Scholarship. For more information about the "Take Charge of Education" program, call (800) 316-6142.
* CHILD HAVEN GRANT -- Bank of America has awarded Child Haven a $45,000 grant for the building of a new facility, along with new cottages. Child Haven is the only child protective center in Clark County that provides temporary care and treatment for abused, neglected and abandoned children.
* FREE PHONE CALLS -- TruGreen-ChemLawn recently donated 15,000 minutes of free long-distance phone time to the patients and families of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, established to conduct basic and clinical research into catastrophic diseases, mainly cancer. When patients come to St. Jude Hospital, the largest childhood cancer research center in the United States, for treatment, often one parent and siblings have to stay home to attend work and school, leaving the family separated. The donated phone time will help bring patients closer to family members who can't be with them during treatment.

* MEDIA GOLF TOURNAMENT -- The Mount Charleston Alpine Village and Golf Resort will sponsor the first media golf tournament 9 a.m. July 11. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Nevada and Big Brothers Big Sisters. There is no initial cost for media players who, with their families, are invited to enjoy a day of golf and recreation. The outdoor ice skating rink and miniature golf course will also be open for family members. Refreshments will be served, and surprise activities for children will take place. An awards ceremony and barbecue will follow the tournament. If interested, notify Tom Letizia at 870-2362.

* RSVP HONORED VOLUNTEERS -- The Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, sponsored by Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada since 1972, recently honored its Las Vegas volunteers at a Showboat hotel-casino luncheon. RSVP volunteers help a variety of local organizations, including hospitals, youth recreation centers, nutrition programs, police stations and education facilities. * GOLDEN PHONE AWARD -- Maria de Lourdes Rigon, an employee of Eric H. Woods, attorney, has won the Golden Phone Award for telephone courtesy, awarded by Philipp's Communications Co. Rigon, chosen for her friendliness, professional attitude and patience,received a plaque, gift basket from PCC Executive Services and gift certificates from Amazon Designs & Flowers, the Gold Factory, Valley Hardware and Ingram Lighting. * EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR -- Donald M. Pedersen, PA-C, Ph.D., was named PA Educator of the Year at the 26th annual conference of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, held in Salt Lake City.
* PRESIDENTIAL CITATION -- Michael Scala, a member of the Variety Club of Southern Nevada, received the 1998 Presidential Citation Award from Variety Club International. The Presidential Citations are for the unsung heroes and heroines who deserve recognition for their commitment to supporting the club's activities to help raise money for special needs children. Scala, a senior technical project support manager at Bank of America who has been helping children since 1986, is on the board of directors and chairs the "Bike's for Kids" program, which has provided more than 385 bicycles and helmets to children.
* RADIO MEDIA AWARD -- KFM 102-FM received the Variety Club International's 1998 Radio Media Award recently. The station partnered with Variety Club of Southern Nevada to sponsor "Care for Kids" radiothon, which has raised more than $100,000 to benefit Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer, St. Jude's Ranch for Children, Ronald McDonald House, Bike's for Kids program and funding for special needs children in Southern Nevada.
* EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR -- The Nevada Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians recently presented Dale Carrison, D.O., with the 1997 Nevada Emergency Physician of the Year Award. Dr. Carrison is director of the UMC Emergency Department.
Special needs
* SUMMER FOOD PROGRAM -- The Upward Bound office at UNLV is currently accepting applications for a summer nutrition program for teenagers. Registration for the program, which runs Sunday through August 10, is today and Thursday. It provides three balanced meals and two snacks for each student at no cost. Presentations on academic subjects, drug education and career opportunities will be offered, as well as field trips. The program is sponsored by the state Department of Education. * HENDERSON SALVATION ARMY -- The Henderson Salvation Army is in dire need of food supplies for its operation. The Henderson Salvation Army has a lack of sites where the public can drop off food donations and its staff is stretched thin running around town picking up donations. To help, Del Webb offered the Desert Willow Community Center, Sun City MacDonald Ranch, 2020 Horizon Ridge Parkway, as a public drop-off site. Easily stored, primarily boxed and canned food are preferred. Anyone interested in helping out can drop off donations at the front desk of the Desert Willow Community Center.
* LASER/INK CARTRIDGES -- The Salvation Army has installed special collection barrels in each of its five thrift stores for used laser and ink cartridges from photocopy machines and printers. When people drop off a used cartridge, they will be able to purchase a recycled cartridge at a 50 percent discount. In addition, shoppers will receive a discount certificate for donations of canned or dry food items that are needed this summer for many hungry families.
* ASTHMA CAMP -- Camp Superkids, a camp for children with asthma, sponsored by the American Lung Association of Nevada, will be Aug. 7-9. If you have a child with asthma who you would like to attend Camp Superkids, call 431-6333 for information.
* KARS FOR KIDNEYS -- An ambulance isn't the only vehicle that can be used to save lives. There is free pickup if you donate your used automobiles to the National Kidney Foundation of Nevada and you may qualify for a tax donation. The Kars for Kidneys program is the longest running vehicle donation program in Nevada. Proceeds are used to help fund the foundation's vital patient services program. * SENIOR INFORMATION SERVICE -- Adult Care Connections help seniors or their families with information regarding their housing needs at no cost. They help seniors of the disabled who are unable to live alone and find alternatives to skilled nursing facilities. They find pharmacies, dentists, doctors and people who do errands, along with an oxygen company who provide services to seniors with dignity and respect. For more information, call 474-7171.
* CHAPEL NEEDED -- The Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, needs to raise $500,000 to build a chapel for mourners, so they will be sheltered from the elements, at a cost of $1.2 million. The state of Nevada contributed $200,000, matched by the federal government, and veterans and the private sector have raised about $300,000. Although much of the labor and equipment is to be donated, older and infirmed friends and relatives of deceased veterans may not be able to attend the funeral of the departed without this chapel. * SENIOR ACTIVITIES -- Volunteers are needed for sharing a little time with the seniors living at Village Oaks, 3025 E. Russell Road. If you or someone you know is interested, call Connie Adkisson, 451-7896.
* SCORE VOLUNTEERS -- Service Corps of Retired Executives has 30 former business owners and seasoned management individuals available just a phone call away. These extremely competent volunteers are ready, willing and able to assist you in resolving your business questions. Best of all, their one-hour appointments are free. Call 388-6104 and arrange to see one of these experts.
* RESCUE MISSION -- The Las Vegas Rescue Mission is in need of volunteers for its Mission Thrift Store. If you can volunteer, call Jesse Houston at 382-1766. The women's and children's shelter also is in need of large-size women's clothing and underclothes, razor blades, coffee, and children's clothing sizes 3-6.
* ROAD TO RECOVERY -- The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers to drive cancer patients to and from their cancer treatment centers. As part of the organization's Road to Recovery program, community volunteers are paired with cancer patients and provide as little as two to three hours of transportation per month. To volunteer, call 798-6857.
* FAMILY SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS -- The 6252D Army Reserve Hospital needs volunteers for its Family Readiness Group. The purpose is to assist soldiers' families during deployment. This network prepares families for mobilization or deployment. Anyone interested in volunteering may call First Lt. Jordan, 558-6562.
* NEWBORN BABIES -- Family to Family Connection, North Las Vegas, is looking for volunteers to help families of newborns with a variety of services. For more information, call 657-6940.
* PUPPY RAISERS -- Canine Companions for Independence provides assistance dogs for individuals with disabilities other than blindness. They are looking for volunteers to raise puppies. For more information, call 754-3300.
