Columnist Paula Del Giudice: Campion bass fisherman pictured on Wheaties box

Wednesday, July 1, 1998 | 11:20 a.m.

PAULA DEL GIUDICE has been an outdoors freelance writer, author and photographer for 13 years. Her column appears Wednesdays.

Breakfast of Champions

Wheaties, the "Breakfast of Champions," soon will be featuring a champion of a new sort on its box.

Champion bass fisherman Denny Brauer of Camdenton, Mo., soon will be seen at the breakfast table of millions of Americans, when he joins other champions such as Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, whose faces have adorned the bright orange box.

Brauer is the winner of the Wal-Mart FLW Tour's points title and will be the first fishing champion featured on the cereal box.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be in the company of the greatest athletes in history," Brauer said.

"I never dreamed that my love of bass fishing would ever lead to a spot on the Wheaties box. I am really excited that fishing has gained this kind of notoriety."

Brauer, 49, was born in Seward, Neb., and was taught to fish at the age of 8 by his uncle, not long after his father died.

Game tags explained

Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Clark County Commission Chambers, 500 South Grand Central Parkway, Don Sefton of Computer Systems Consultants will explain the hunt application process at the Clark County Wildlife Advisory Board.

If you've wondered just exactly how you did (or didn't) draw a big game tag, he's the guy who can answer all your questions. Sefton is the manager of the private firm that conducts the big game drawings.

In addition, the board will elect its officers and review a petition of the "no boat" regulation at Key Pittman Wildlife Management Area.

Stream fishing variable

Nevada Division of Wildlife reports on central Nevada streams indicate the wet winter and spring have made access and fishing difficult in the Toiyabe, Monitor and Toquima ranges.

NDOW recommends checking with the U.S. Forest Service at 482-6286 before heading toward streams on national forest lands.

The fishing at Chiatovich Creek ought to be good, though, after NDOW stocked the stream with 2,000 rainbow trout last week.

Chiatovich Creek in Esmeralda County is located approximately 11 miles north of Dyer off State Route 264. Stocking began approximately four miles above the highway and took place at several locations farther upstream.

WHIN banquet

Final plans are being made for the Wildlife and Habitat Improvement of Nevada (WHIN) banquet July 25 at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino.

This annual feast and fund raising extravaganza is a nice way to enjoy a summer evening and aid a conservation organization that helps make a difference in Southern Nevada.

To purchase tickets call Denny Selleck at 451-1416, Tom Bowen at 384-5006 or Wayne Bliss at 736-4182 before July 20.

Help for dummies

The latest in the series of "for dummies" books, Fly Fishing for Dummies, offers some good practical advice.

Anglers also will get a good chuckle out of this book. But it is highly recommended for the beginning fly angler -- especially if he takes himself too seriously.

Conservation online

The Bureau of Reclamation's Virtual Water Conservation Center "WaterShare" is available online. The web site provides information for all ages and interests ranging from local water conservation programs to a series of interactive children's activities.

There also is a link to the University of California, Davis' water experts database.

To find WaterShare, go to http://www.watershare.usbr.gov.
