February programs at Red Rock Canyon

Feb. 1, 3, 8, 10, 17 and 24: Introduction to Red Rock Canyon: Introductory hike and program at the Visitor Center introduces new visitors to the canyon. Programs run once an hour, noon to 2 p.m., and last 30 minutes each. No reservations required.

Feb. 1, Oak Creek Canyon Adventure: Moderate five-mile morning hike to overview the canyon. Bring water, snack and meet at the campgrounds.

Feb. 7, Winter Wildlife at Pine Creek: Moderate three-mile morning hike hike into the canyon meets at the Visitor Center.

Feb 7, Water, People and the Spanish Trail: Easy four-mile hike through the Wheeler Springs area includes a scramble up a 400-foot-high hill with views of Cottonwood and Blue Diamond.

Feb. 8 and 27, Geology at Sunset: Discover the reason Red Rock Canyon got its name during a moderately easy, three-mile stroll.

Feb. 9, Friends of Red Rock Canyon Meeting: Are you interested in working with educators and children? If so, Friends of Red Rock Canyon is looking for people to assist in their effort at the canyon. They meet at 7 p.m. at the BLM office, 4765 Vegas Drive. RSVP to Kathy August, 361-1922.

Feb. 11, Willow Springs Nature Walk: Easy hike for beginners is a great introduction to the canyon. Three-hour program begins at the Visitor Center. Bring binoculars.

Feb. 12, Seniors Hike to Lost Creek: Easy one-mile morning hike with a discussion of the ancient history of Red Rock Canyon.

Feb. 14, Mountain Lions of La Madre: Learn about the big cats of Red Rock, their space requirements, foods and behavior on a three-mile moderate hike. Bring camera, binoculars and a snack and meet at the Visitor Center.

Feb. 15, Birds of Prey at Red Rock: Learn a bit about the magnificent hawks, eagles and owls of the canyon, how they hunt, live and why they are important.

Feb. 20, Hidden Treasures of Pine Creek: Explore the diversity of Pine Creek Canyon on a moderate five-mile morning hike.

Feb. 21, Tracking the Big Horned Sheep: Moderate four-mile hike involves some rock scrambling from Sandstone Quarry to Gateway Canyon and back.
