Cheyenne girls stay unbeaten in Sunset Division

Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998 | 9:29 a.m.

Nobody's perfect.

It's one of the most overused proverbs in the English language, but somehow it has eluded the ears of Cheyenne High's Lady Shields.

Cheyenne remained unbeaten in Sunset Division play Wednesday evening, holding off a late rally by visiting Bonanza for a 45-38 victory.

The win moved Cheyenne (15-6 overall) to a perfect 7-0 division record, a game and a half ahead of idle Bishop Gorman. Bonanza (8-10 overall) fell to 3-4 in division play, a half-game out of third.

Cheyenne coach Karen Weitz was happy with her team's performance, but not ready to discuss a potential perfect conference season.

"We're taking it one game at a time," said Weitz following the victory. "Any team on our side of the conference can beat anyone else, so we've got to be ready every night."

Against Bonanza's collapsing 2-3 zone, Lady Shield Amanda Koval was ready. The 5-foot-7 senior connected on 5 of 12 3-point attempts and finished with a game-high 21 points.

"My shot felt good tonight," said Koval, who added six rebounds and two steals. "It took me awhile to get going, but they finally started falling."

Cheyenne entered the fourth quarter with a comfortable 40-24 lead. But the Lady Bengals went on a 13-0 run and trailed by only three points with 31 seconds remaining. Koval was fouled and calmly made both free throws to put the game away.

Also contributing to the victory were Yolanda Banks and Tiffaney Adams. The powerful inside duo combined for 17 points and 34 rebounds (Banks pulled down 24 on her own).

Rhonda Williams played well for Bonanza. She led a balanced Lady Bengal attack with 14 points and nine rebounds.
