Gunman remains at large after home invasion
Monday, Jan. 26, 1998 | 10:39 a.m.
Metro Police were still looking today for a gunman who broke into an eastern Las Vegas home, shot a couple and fled.
Police responded to a burglary in progress at 221 Bergin Drive near East Charleston Boulevard at 9:40 p.m. Saturday after a child called 911 and said his "mother and father had been shot by an intruder," Sgt. William Minor said.
The female victim called 911 a few minutes later and said she had been shot in the face, her roommate had been shot in the chest and that the assailant was gone, police said.
The man chased the gunman out of the house, Minor said. The suspect was last seen going into the house next door, so police and SWAT officers surrounded the residence until 1:40 a.m. He was not inside and was still at large today, he said.
Police said the couple knew the gunman and that the attack may have been prompted by a property dispute.
The man was shot trying to protect the woman, Minor said.
The woman was in serious condition today at University Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. The man's condition was unknown. Their names were not released.
