County vacancy decision resolved

Monday, Jan. 26, 1998 | 10:38 a.m.

County Manager Dale Askew's selection of a new human resources director became easier when Metro Police personnel director Doug Spring removed himself from the running last week.

Askew has announced that Beverly Nelson-Glode, the human resources and risk management director for the Seattle suburb of Renton, Wa., will replace Cheryl Miller as Clark County's human resources director.

Miller, whose last day was Friday, is the latest of several administrators who left in the wake of former county manager Pat Shalmy's departure last April.

"Obviously, Doug was our first choice," Askew said. "But he had second thoughts or had talked with the sheriff and decided he would stay where he was at."

Labor representatives had opposed the appointment of Spring, and sent at least 25 letters to the County Commission expressing concerns about Spring's management style and his past role as the county's labor relations manager.

Spring could not be reached.

Askew will ask the commission to ratify Nelson-Glode's appointment Feb. 3, but she will not start her job for another four to six weeks because she has to sell her house and wrap up her current duties at Renton, where she has been personnel director since 1992.

Nelson-Glode also was labor relations officer for the city of Milwaukee for a year, and spent five years as director of personnel and labor relations for the city of Norwalk, Conn.

Askew noted that Nelson-Glode has extensive experience in labor relations, noting her "experience with the issues facing the municipal workplace and her outstanding track record."
