UNR researcher expects study will stir controversy

Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998 | 6:40 a.m.

Jeff Marotta, a graduate student in clinical psychology, said he thinks chronic bettors may be able to stop their habit without the help of formal treatment programs.

Marotta, who's conducting the survey as part of work toward a doctorate degree, will present preliminary study results at the 12th national conference on problem gambling in June in Las Vegas.

He said he expects a hostile reaction from treatment specialists, who maintain problem gamblers can't be helped without formal treatment programs that rely on experts.

"I'm going to get (verbally) beaten up," Marotta said. "I recognize there will be a lot of resistance to this study in the professional community."
