Letter: Put a stop to abusive traveling animal shows

Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998 | 6:47 a.m.

Animal training is an ugly business, and circus life is hell for the animals. Chipperfield and his brother Graham Thomas are well aware of the risks inherent in animal training and have chosen this way of life as a career. However, the tiger had no choice and is another example of why these wild animals shouldn't be forced to "perform."

If these experienced trainers cannot protect themselves from death and injury, how can they protect the public? Arnie was slaughtered in his cage, shot five times with a 12-gauge shotgun by Chipperfield's brother. At least Arnie is finally out of circus life, but thousands more are left in this cruel dismal life to "perform." After all, "the show must go on."

We are approaching the 21st century. We all know animal acts are not educational, do not promote conservation and are hell on Earth for the animals stuck in an abusive way of life. The public is fast becoming aware of the abusive, inhumane, dismal life of traveling animal shows. In most cases death is the only way out for animals trapped in a cage called "home."
