Letter: Goddess Temple is sacred space, look elsewhere for sand and gravel pit
Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998 | 6:47 a.m.
Temple visitors and ritual participants may come from Las Vegas or from anywhere in the world. For us, this is sacred space, every bit as holy as a more conventional church. It is one of few sites, worldwide, that are dedicated to the Pagan Way and, unlike Corvette's proposed mine, it would not be so easy to move it elsewhere. BLM, together with other government agencies, owns/controls/leases over 80 percent of Nevada land.
The Shoshone, from whom we borrow our space, have only these 22 acres. Corvette would lose nothing by choosing another site; even a cursory walk over neighboring land (and the product of previous "test" mines) would prove that there is plenty of rock, sand and gravel for the taking all over this valley. They do not have to put their mine at our back door. They do not have to damage the fragile desert springs.
Hopefully, Ed Seum of the BLM will see things our way and deny their petition; if not, we'll take it to court. This is our church; we do not want their mine. If this marks us as hysterical, so be it.
