Letter: Budget surplus should reduce deficit, not expand programs

Friday, Jan. 16, 1998 | 9:39 a.m.

The budget surplus, if any, should be dedicated to reducing the federal debt, not expanded programs. This will stop politicians, from both parties, from buying votes. Also, tax cuts sound good but through political compromise will lead to higher government spending and debt.

Reducing the debt will lead to more honest political debate to further reduce the debt and the size of a bloated federal government.
