Agassi funds new school

Friday, Jan. 16, 1998 | 10:46 a.m.

Abused and neglected children in Clark County's care have a new, state-of-the-art, $1.1 million school courtesy of Las Vegas resident Andre Agassi.

The seven-room, 10,000-square foot Agassi Center for Education opened Thursday at Child Haven, the county's shelter for children in protective custody. It replaces a two-room facility built in 1973.

The building was made possible with a donation from the Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation and the support of the Clark County School District, the County Commission and a group of business people led by interior designer Leslie Paraguirre.

Clark County Family and Youth Services Director Kirby Burgess said the center is an important link in the education of the children whose development is often delayed when placed in protective custody.

"This school allows children with different educational needs and at different grade levels to receive instruction tailored to their needs," Burgess said.
