Las Vegas mayor ties knot

Monday, Jan. 12, 1998 | 10:17 a.m.

Jones spokeswoman Cathy Hanson said about 25 immediate family members and close friends attended Saturday's wedding.

"It was a very small, private and joyous ceremony," Hanson said.

The marriage is the third for Jones and the second for Schuetz. Jones will not change her name, Hanson said.

The couple exchanged vows just days after Jones announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth, and medical tests are under way to determine the severity of the threat to her health.

Several people close to Jones said she and Schuetz had planned to marry for a while, but moved up the wedding after the cancer diagnosis.

Hanson declined to comment on Jones' medical condition. The couple wanted to keep the ceremony as private as possible, she added.

"They are planning an elaborate party later this spring to celebrate their wedding," Hanson said. "No plans for a honeymoon have been discussed."

District Judge Gene Porter oversaw the ceremony.

Jones, 48, took office in 1991 and was re-elected in 1995 after an unsuccessful 1994 run for governor.

Schuetz, 47, is president of a gaming consulting company, Schuetz Inc. He's also a former chief executive officer and president of the Stratosphere Corp. in Las Vegas.

The mayor's bridesmaids were friends Marsha Miller and Barbara Molasky. Jones was given away by her two daughters, Maura Lasater and Kaitlyn Jones.
