Weekend Update
Friday, Jan. 9, 1998 | 9:33 a.m.
MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER -- Mezzo-soprano Carol Sparrow and tenor Randolph Locke combine their vocal talents in a program of operatic and favorite selections for Saturday's 8 p.m. concert at UNLV's Artemus Ham Hall. Tickets for the Southern Nevada Community Concert are $15 at the Ham Hall box office, 895-3801, or by calling 593-1898.
JAZZIN AT THE WINCHESTER -- The Nevada Jazz Orchestra, 17 musicians strong, will be in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Winchester Community Center, 3130 McLeod Drive. Artistic director Barry Ross is an award-winning composer-arranger and trombone soloist who worked with the big bands of Buddy Morrow, Glenn Miller and Woody Herman. Tickets are $7, $5 for Las Vegas Jazz Society members, seniors and students under 18; call 455-7340.
DANCE
HIP HOP WITH HAVOC AND FUSION -- Culture Shock Las Vegas, a professional hip hop dance company, has brought in video dancers Fusion and Havoc to teach the latest dance moves from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gold's Gym East, 3750 E. Flamingo Road. Havoc will also share his knowledge of the necessary skills and tools it takes to make it to the top. The class is open to children and adults of all ages for $10, and bring along your knee pads. For details, call 223-3038.
ART
DREAM-MAKERS ARTS FESTIVAL -- "Dream-Makers, Tales to Tell," a delightful collection of the art of children, who were challenged with interweaving words and pictures as "visual spinners" of real and imaginary stories, goes on exhibit Sunday during the 1-4 p.m. festival at UNLV's Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. Admission is free.
ETC.
BEAM ABOARD THE STARSHIP -- Blast through distant galaxies, battle fearless Klinons, as part of the USSS Enterprise's intrepid crew -- that's Stark Trek: The Experience," the Las Vegas Hilton's newest attraction. Take a ride on the virtual-reality shuttlecraft, which uses a six-axis simulator platform, similar to NASA's, to bring you right into the Experience. There's nothing else like it on Earth, and you can be part of it for a $9.95 ticket.
BE THE KING FOR A DAY -- Relive the '50s and '60s at the Rockin' Elvis Birthday Celebration 6-10 tonight and 1-10 p.m. Saturday at the Fremont Street Experience. Live entertainment (wait till you catch The Red Elvises from Siberia), food and drink specials, classic car displays and strolling faux celebrities are on tap; and you can put on your sunglasses and rhinestones and enter the Most Outrageous Elvis Costume contest from 3-6 p.m. each day.
FLYING AT THE RIO -- The fabulous floats and creatures of Masquerade Village take to the sky every afternoon at the Rio, beginning at 1 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon Sunday through Thursday, in a swirling fantasy of lights, color and sound. You can watch the production, free from care, and free of charge.
YO HO HO! -- Every day at 4 p.m., the Hispaniola and the HMS Britannia sail into Buccaneer Bay and the battle begins. Cannons crash, flames blaze and men are washed overboard in a spectacular display of maritime might. And this is the darnedest part: When the losing ship is sunk -- we won't tell you who wins -- and the winners sail off with their plunder, some magic is performed and they do it all over again 90 minutes later. Enjoy all this carnage at Buccaneer Bay, just in front of Treasure Island on the Strip.
