Stuck vehicles make for busy day on Peavine Peak for rescuers

Monday, Jan. 5, 1998 | 2:17 a.m.

Seven people were stranded when their vehicles became stuck in the snow around 4 p.m. Sunday, Sheriff's Sgt. Bob Towery said.

One person in the group used a cellular phone to call the sheriff's office, which sent out a snow cat, snowmobiles, a tracking dog and personnel on showshoes to find them.

All seven were located in good condition, Towery said.

Two hours later, as that rescue effort was winding down, a report came in of a 17-year-old who was missing or lost, the sheriff's office said.

The youth hiked out near Mogul and made contact with rescuers around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said the teen indicated he was able to free his vehicle once, but then it became stuck again after he got lost while trying to take another route down.

The juvenile also was in good condition, Towery said.
