Two die in Southern Nevada accidents

Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 | 8:38 a.m.

A 27-year-old driver was killed before dawn when a speeding vehicle with no headlights on slammed into the left side of his 1989 Honda.

Thursday's fatality was the first of the new year for Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.

The victim left the parking lot of the St. Tropez Hotel and was headed east on Harmon when his car was struck at 4:37 a.m. by a car driven by Sergio Navarro, 21, of North Las Vegas, police said.

Witnesses told police that Navarro's car was traveling faster than the 35 mph speed limit and had no lights on.

The impact caused Navarro's car to travel into the hotel parking lot, where it collided with a parked vehicle.

The driver of the Honda died at the scene.

The driver's name was not released pending notification of relatives.

In another accident, one man died when a vehicle traveling west on Warm Springs Road in Henderson strayed from the travel lane and ran into a light pole.

The unidentified passenger died at the scene of Thursday's 2 a.m. crash.
