A snow advisory was in effect for the Lake Tahoe area and above 7,000 feet in Mono County, Calif., as a low pressure system moved into the region early today.
Chains or snow tires were required on all Sierra Nevada roadways, including Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and Highway 50.
Restrictions also were in effect for Geiger Grade to Virginia City.
The National Weather Service said snow was expected to continue through the day with snow levels ranging from 6,000 feet to 7,000 feet, dropping to around 5,000 feet by late afternoon.
Accumulations of 2-4 inches were anticipated around Lake Tahoe, with up to 8 inches possible at the higher elevations, forecasters said.
Snow was expected to taper off to scattered snow showers by evening.
Another system off the Pacific Coast could bring another dose of winter later in the weekend, the weather service said.
