Lyon commissioners put off decision on smoking issue

Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 | 10 a.m.

Emily Newpher, who oversees the facility as county Human Services program manager, said the ban is needed to make its policy consistent with the county's other senior centers.

She noted senior centers in Dayton and Silver Springs earlier banned smoking. Out of 50 seniors who visit the Fernley center daily, five or six have lodged complaints about smoking, she added.

However, commissioners decided to defer to the Fernley Senior Center Site Council for a decision or recommendation on the ban, after which the commission could make a final decision, the Mason Valley News reported.

Commissioner Frank Elwell said five or six complaints didn't seem like that many out of 50 seniors each day, and the complaints didn't constitute a reason for a ban.

But Newpher said the center should join the ban because of the clear health hazards of second-hand smoke.
