Letter: Fine is excessive for selling car on vacant lot

Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 | 10:22 a.m.

I received a parking ticket for displaying my vehicle with a "For Sale" sign on a dirt lot. There are always cars for sale parked there. No signs say "Keep Off," "No Trespassing" or "Private Property." I didn't realize I was breaking a law -- certainly not a law with a $100 penalty. I paid the fine and have learned my lesson, but I do feel $100 was excessive. I wasn't near a fire hydrant. I wasn't at a red-painted curb. I wasn't in a handicapped parking place. I was on an unmarked dirt field.

If I had been driving (not parked), had no license, ran into a person and then through a coffee-shop window, I would have received no ticket and no fine. Where is justice when you need it?
