Indian colony won’t hold new elections
Friday, Jan. 2, 1998 | 9:57 a.m.
Tribal member Josephine Astor and six others protested the outcome of the vote in which Chairman Arlan Melendez and five incumbents were reelected. One new council member was elected.
After considering the protest, Melendez said the council determined the mistakes did not affect the outcome and were not serious enough to warrant a new election.
But he said voting ordinances will be revised to clarify issues that were brought up in the election challenge.
Those seeking a new vote argued that one person was allowed to vote whose name was not on the final list.
They also said a designated polling place did not open on time and that ballot boxes were in the possession of a candidate.
