Letter: Lane discipline root of road-congestion evil

Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998 | 10:49 a.m.

Drivers should be required to drive in the right lane except to pass and not be allowed to pass on the right. This works quite well in Europe where a far greater amount of traffic moves on highways equal to or smaller than I-15. Granted, I-15 has a number of problems which need to be addressed, but the congestion problem will never be solved until drivers are legislated into common courtesy.

Actually, Nevada already has a "move to the right" law, but authorities don't bother with it. Speeding fines are a much easier way of raising revenue than enforcing a law which would increase traffic flow, safety and eliminate the major cause of open-highway road rage.
