A groundbreaking ceremony for a $3.8 million building that will be the new home for the U.S. Army's 6th Recruiting Brigade was to be held at 10 a.m. today in North Las Vegas.
The 19,200-square-foot building, to be erected at E. Red Coach Road and Fifth Street on property owned by Nellis Air Force Base, is scheduled for completion by the end of December, according to an army spokesman.
The recruiting brigade is presently located at Fort Baker, Calif., north of San Francisco.
A staff of almost 100 soldiers and civilians will be moved when the new building on the three-acre site is finished.
Fort Baker is being closed as a result of a recommendation by the Base Realignment and Closure Committee.
The North Las Vegas site was selected as the new headquarters because of its proximity to a military installation and the availability of a major metropolitan airport.
The 6th Recruiting Brigade recruits active-duty soldiers and reservists from 327 recruiting stations in 15 western states.
