Penalty phase of Singleton trial to get underway Tuesday

Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998 | 11:04 a.m.

Singleton, 70, was found guilty of first-degree murder last week for stabbing Roxanne Hayes to death in his living room. Jurors who convicted him now must decide whether he should spend life in prison or die in the electric chair.

The jury was set to begin hearing testimony Monday afternoon. But the verdict came in too late Friday for lawyers to book the flights for witnesses flying in from the West Coast, Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Bob Mitcham told jurors.

Singleton first grabbed headlines 20 years ago when he was convicted in California of raping teen-age hitchhiker Mary Vincent and chopping off her forearms with an ax.

Vincent is one of the witnesses expected to testify against Singleton when the penalty phase of his trial begins Tuesday morning.
