"From every fiber of my body,
To every strand of my hair.
I hope to be able to take a stand,
To rise up and be a real man.
Voices from the past scream out in pain,
Voices from the present should shout our gain."
Baylor and nine other local students will be honored by U.S. Bank and the community at a reception celebrating Black History Month and featuring the winning poems from the bank's fifth annual African-American Reflections poetry contest 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
The highlight of the reception will be a presentation by each winning poet of his or her original poem. Each will receive a $100 U.S. savings bond plus a plaque, and the poet's teacher will receive $100 for use in the classroom.
U.S. Bank has prepared a book of the winning poems that will be available at the reception. The book will be distributed to schools, libraries and organizations throughout the state as a resource for African-American studies. Additional copies of the book may be obtained by calling 688-3563.
