Local workshops give women financial guidance

Women wanting to learn how to improve their financial situation can do so by attending March workshops held by The Women's Financial Clinic.
The workshops will feature presentations by financial specialists who will cover a range of topics from organizing records, spending, banking and managing credit to insurance and retirement investments and will be followed by small group discussions.
"Traditionally, women have not taken the leadership role in management of family finances," said Alice Crites, Cooperative Extension family specialist and program coordinator.
Crites added that many mid-life and elderly women suddenly find themselves divorced or widowed after many years of marriage and not able to handle the financial aspects of singlehood.
Jane Strick-land, 58, of Las Vegas had exactly that problem.
"I was just divorced after 35 years of marriage, and had to start all over," said Strickland who just two years ago was jobless, had only a car and $100.
Now Strickland has two savings accounts, an annuity for retirement and close to a down payment for a house.
The Women's Financial Clinic is particularly targeted to mid-life and older women, but men and women of all ages are welcome to attend, Crites said.
Lisa Chapman of Las Vegas said the course is a real eye opener.
"I'm 30 and I found out I need $1 million to retire at my current standard of living. Now I'm doing what they told me to reach that goal."
The workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., March 7, 14, 21 and 28 at Cannon Senior Services Center, 340 N. 11th St. The cost is $15 and scholarships are available. The deadline for registration is March 2.
