Orlando Solar Bears 3, Grand Rapids Griffins 2 (SO)
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Scott Hollis scored in the sixth shootout round to give the Orlando Solar Bears (28-20-8) their third straight win, 3-2 over the Grand Rapids Griffins (28-24-6) Friday night. A sellout crowd of 10,834 was on hand at Van Andel Arena. Hollis and Hubie McDonough scored in regulation, and accounted for two of the Solar Bears' four tiebreaker tallies. The Griffins, who remain third in the IHL Northeast Division, two points behind Orlando, scored twice in the second period. Ed Patterson tied the score at 1-1 on a power play at 8:17, and Danton Cole gave Grand Rapids the lead with 17 seconds left in the period. Winning goalie Allan Bester stopped 25 of the Griffins' 27 shots in regulation. Patrick Lalime faced 31 and made 29 saves in the Grand Rapids goal.
Cincinnati Cyclones 1, Indianapolis Ice 0
CINCINNATI--Gilbert Dionne scored the only goal of the game, 1:17 after the opening faceoff, as the Cincinnati Cyclones shut out the Indianapolis Ice 1-0 Friday night. The crowd of 10,727 at The Crown was the fourth-largest in Cyclones history. Cincinnati goalie Geoff Sarjeant made 23 saves to preserve his fifth career shutout. The Cyclones are second in the IHL Central Division at 28-22-10. Netminder Marc Lamothe stopped 30 of 31 shots as the third-place Ice dropped to 28-27-3.
Cleveland Lumberjacks 4, Fort Wayne Komets 1
FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Lane Lambert and Jock Callander had a goal and an assist each to lead the Cleveland Lumberjacks (27-26-6) to a 4-1 win over the first-place Fort Wayne Komets in an IHL Central Division matchup Friday at Memorial Coliseum. Lambert scored first, at 1:52 of the first period, as the Jacks put the brakes on a four-game skid. Joe Dziedzic made the score 2-0 at 1:42 of the third, and Callander and Mark Cornforth boosted the lead to 4-0 within the next 59 seconds. Andrei Bashkirov saved Fort Wayne (32-20-5) from the shutout with a goal at 8:59 of the final period. Pat Jablonski posted the win in goal with 29 saves on Fort Wayne's 30 shots. Komets starter Bruce Racine stopped 17 of 20. Judd Lambert came in during the third period, and finished with five saves on six chances.
Houston Aeros 2, Detroit Vipers 1 (SO)
HOUSTON--Brian Wiseman, David Oliver and Mark Freer scored shootout goals as the Houston Aeros (37-16-6) beat the Detroit Vipers 2-1 Friday in front of 9,521 at the Compaq Center. The Aeros, who came into Friday's game two points behind Southwest Division leaders Long Beach, won the five-round tiebreaker 3-2. Oliver scored Houston's only goal in regulation, 40 seconds into the third period. Dan Kesa, who also scored in the shootout, equalized for the Vipers (36-13-11) at 14:46. Ryan Bach made 24 saves in regulation to help Houston to the win. Detroit netminder Rich Parent faced 32 shots and made 31 saves.
Quebec Rafales 5, Manitoba Moose 4
WINNIPEG--Jean-Francois Jomphe scored 1:44 into the third period to give the Quebec Rafales (21-32-6) their first win in four starts, 5-4 over the Manitoba Moose Friday before 6,763 at Winnipeg Arena. The Rafales took a 3-0 lead in the first period, with power play goals by Sylvain Naud and Eric Rud, plus a shorthanded tally by team scoring leader Steve Larouche. Dennis Maxwell also scored for the Rafales, in the second period. Ralph Intranuovo and Scott Arneil had a goal and an assist apiece for the Moose (24-30-5). Greg Pankewicz picked up his team-leading 29th goal of the season, and Brett Hauer scored in the second. Michel Mongeau and Brad Purdie each assisted on two Manitoba goals. Winning goalie Tom Draper held off a 40-shot Manitoba attack, making 36 saves. Fred Brathwaite started in goal for the Moose, stopping four of seven shots in the first 12:28. Brian Elder turned away 17 of 19 in relief, and took the loss.
Long Beach Ice Dogs 5, San Antonio Dragons 2
SAN ANTONIO--Darryl Williams scored twice and assisted on a third goal as the Long Beach Ice Dogs (37-16-8) defeated the San Antonio Dragons 5-2 Friday in front of 8,471 at the Alamodome. Shawn Penn won the game with his third goal of the season, at 14:54 of the third period. It was the second of four final period goals by the Ice Dogs, who also recorded tallied by Kevin Todd, Williams and, in the final minute, Doug Ast. Long Beach has won three straight, and leads the IHL Southwest Division by two points over Houston. John Purves gave San Antonio (18-34-5) an early 1-0 lead, scoring on a power play at 4:27 of the second period. Micah Aivazoff rounded out the Dragons' scoring at 16:35 of the third. IHL goaltending leader Mike Buzak made 24 saves to post his 11th win. San Antonio's Scott Bailey faced 33 shots and made 28 saves.
Milwaukee Admirals 4, Kansas City Blades 3
KANSAS CITY--Eric Fenton's second goal of the game, on a power play at 10:44 of the second period, pushed the Milwaukee Admirals (31-24-4) past the Kansas City Blades 4-3 Friday before a Kemper Arena crowd of 10,132. Fenton also scored 15 minutes into the game. Kelly Fairchild and Jeff Nelson rounded out the Admirals' scoring, and Nelson had one assist. All three Kansas City goals, two by Jeff Serowik and one by J.F. Quintin, came on power plays. Mike Torchia started in goal for the Admirals, and stopped 10 of 12 shots before being replaced by Danny Lorenz, who made 31 saves on 32 chances to post the win. Pokey Reddick stopped 15 of 19 as the Blades (28-23-8) took their first loss in four games.
Utah Grizzlies 4, Las Vegas Thunder 3
LAS VEGAS--John LeBlanc scored twice in a 3:01 span of the second period to lead the Utah Grizzlies (36-15-7) to a 4-3 win over the Las Vegas Thunder (25-26-6) Friday in front of 6,686 at the Thomas & Mack Center. LeBlanc's second goal, at 12:07, was the game-winner. He also assisted on a third Grizzlies goal, by Mark Lawrence at 5:24 of the second. Chris Taylor put Utah on the board with a shorthanded tally 12:34 into the opening period. Brett Punchard led the way for Las Vegas, with goals in the first and third periods. Steve Bancroft pulled the Thunder within one with one second left in the game. Utah goalie Philippe DeRouville faced 37 shots and made 34 saves. Manny Legace turned away 24 of 27 for the Thunder in the first 29:06. Tim Cheveldae suffered the loss despite going eight-for-nine in relief.
