Preps: Calabro and Armstrong named MVPs

After leading their teams into the final four, Green Valley's J.B. Calabro and Bonanza's Erin Armstrong have been named the Southern 4A Zone girls soccer co-MVPs.
Calabro, a junior and the Sunrise Division Player of the Year, led all area players with 27 assists, 12 more than anyone else in Las Vegas. With the center-midfielder running the offense, the Gators racked up a 21-2-1 overall record and earned a spot in Saturday's zone championship.
"I think it's well deserved," said Green Valley coach Vince Hart, whose squad topped the list with three All-Southern Zone selections. "She's very talented, and she's overcome a lot of injuries this year."
Armstrong, a senior and the Sunset Division Player of the Year, finished tied for third among area players with 19 goals and wound up fourth overall with 11 assists. The forward helped the Bengals to an 11-4-1 mark before their season ended Wednesday night in the zone semifinals.
Cimarron-Memorial coach Pat Webb, who is stepping down after 17 years of coaching, wrapped up his career on the sideline with the Southern Zone's Coach of the Year award. Webb led the Spartans to a 9-3-3 record in a season in which they were picked to finish near the bottom of the Sunset Division.
"I'm very proud of this," said Webb, whose club fell in the zone semifinals Wednesday night to Bishop Gorman. "After 17 years of coaching, this is a nice way to finish up."
Also highlighting the All-Southern Zone team are leading area goal-scorer Cosette Joffs of Green Valley (25 goals), Gorman forward Amber Woodward (18 goals, nine assists) and goalkeepers Annie Schlosser of Valley (four shutouts) and Kelly Smith of Cimarron-Memorial (four shutouts).
Basic coach Debra Jamison, who led her squad into the postseason for the first time in school history, earned Coach of the Year honors in the Sunset Division.
