Second meeting of chemical safety commission to be held Monday
Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998 | 1:45 a.m.
Gov. Bob Miller created the 13-member Commission on Workplace Safety and Community Protection to evaluate state laws and regulations dealing with hazardous materials after the Jan. 7 explosion that killed one man. Three others are missing and presumed dead.
Sierra Chemical makes explosives used in the mining industry.
Authorities have said an initial blast occurred in a room where workers were mixing an explosive brew of chemicals. That explosion triggered another one at a building where 10,000 pounds of explosives were being stored.
The blasts leveled the plant in Mustang east of Reno.
The cause of the explosion has not been determined.
Monday's meeting is to include a discussion of standard operating procedures at Sierra Chemical and accepted industry safety standards, according to a meeting agenda.
Miller has asked the commission to submit a report and recommendations by April 15.
