During her career that spanned nearly half a century, Doris Reed spent untold hours helping students to read before she retired in 1986. Many of those who benefited from Reed's help might not even know an operation to remove tumors from behind her eyes has left her blind. But students at an elementary school named in her honor are helping to raise money through a "read-a-thon" to defray $100,000 in medical bills not covered by the insurance.
Then there is the story of Susan Hutchinson, who was named the Nevada Technology Teacher of the Year by the International Technology Education Association. Hutchinson has taught for 20 years and 14 of those years have been spent at Jim Bridger Middle School. Beyond her talents as an instructor, Hutchinson's devotion to her students shows why she was an obvious choice for the award. "God had a plan for me," she says. "I have no family, no kids of my own, so these kids are my family -- they are my kids."
