Laxalt, 45, has been named to the $55,126-a-year post of deputy state insurance commissioner.
Laxalt has no experience in the insurance field, but Insurance Commissioner Alice Molasky-Arman said he'll be responsible for personnel and budget matters.
Laxalt formerly worked for his father's law firm in Washington, D.C., and was an assistant for the Bureau of Land Management.
Molasky-Arman said she was "very cautious" in making the choice since she had worked for the elder Laxalt when he owned the Ormsby House hotel-casino in Carson City. She said she has known the younger Laxalt a long time.
Fourteen people applied for the position. Molasky-Arman said three other top staffers joined in the interviews.
"They were all impressed by his (Laxalt) credentials," she said. And each one, she said "believed he could handle the position."
The post has been vacant since the departure of David Hall last year.
