Jones announces try for third term as mayor

Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998 | 10:26 a.m.

In a none-too-subtle manner, Las Vegas Mayor Jan Laverty Jones unofficially announced her candidacy for a third term at Monday's State of the City address.

"I want to bring this city into the new millennium," Jones said to about 200 residents, city staff and media during her half-hour speech.

Jones' term will end in 1999.

When asked point-blank about her plans to run for a third term, Jones would only repeat her statement.

"That means I'll bring the city into the next millennium," she said.

Sources at City Hall confirmed that the mayor would be running for a third term in 1999.

"We talked about it and she's really excited," said City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Michael McDonald.

McDonald was considering running for mayor in 1999, depending on whether Jones runs again. City Councilman Arnie Adamsen -- the longest-standing member of the council -- also was considering running.

"I think it'd be great for this city to have continuity," Adamsen said, adding that he wouldn't be running for mayor now that Jones has announced her run.
