Preps: Honor Roll
Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 | 9:16 a.m.
If 10 points and 10 rebounds is considered a double-double, Las Vegas High's Lillie Williams may have produced the area's most outrageous double-double ever last Friday night.
Williams, a 6-foot junior center, had the type of night most players only dream about. She scored 47 points and yanked down 42 rebounds (according to the team statistician) -- both school records-- in her team's 90-36 win over Valley.
"It was great," said Williams, who made 23 of 44 field-goal attempts. "I got position under the boards, and I got help from my teammates, especially (point guard) Kristine Dugan."
Williams followed that remarkable performance with another solid effort in the Wildcats' 59-34 loss to Silverado Monday night. She scored 26 points and came up with 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Others who came up big this past week:
* ALEX HERNANDEZ: The 6-2 Valley senior guard averaged 26 points and 11 rebounds in three contests to help the Vikings stay in second place in the tight Sunrise Division Standings. Hernandez scored 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds in Valley's biggest win of the season -- a 75-74 triple-overtime triumph over host Las Vegas
* KENDALL THACKER, JOE PERRY: The Cimarron-Memorial wrestling duo captured individual titles at Saturday's Victor Valley Invitational in California to lead the Spartans to a second-place finish in the 19-team event. Perry, a senior, defeated his three opponents at 215 pounds. Thacker, a junior, did likewise at 152 pounds as Cimarron finished just three points behind victorious Green Valley, the only other Nevada school participating. Perry and Thacker are defending 4A state champions and are undefeated in dual meet competition this season.
* J.B. CALABRO: Green Valley's starting center-midfielder continued to key the Gators' undefeated run through the Sunrise Division, coming up with back-to-back three-assist, two-goal games. The area's assist leader with 26, the junior had a hand in all five Green Valley goals in a 5-0 victory over Silverado and repeated the trick in a 7-0 win over Las Vegas.
