Babbitt seeks talks on Indian casino issue
Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998 | 9:45 a.m.
Babbitt wants discussions with lawmakers who would restrict his control over the Indian casino issue.
Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., and Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., were the main sponsors of an amendment last year that prohibits Babbitt from approving Indian gambling compacts before Oct. 1. Babbitt called the legislation "kind of an ominous signal."
Babbitt has proposed regulations that would allow him to authorize Indian casino projects in instances where states have rejected them. Governors and other lawmakers say such authority would be a violation of states' rights.
