Pay hike approved for Cram

Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998 | 11:26 a.m.

Clark County School Superintendent Brian Cram will get a 7 percent pay raise for last year and another 7 percent raise for this school year. The pay hike amounts to $20,106 and will bring his salary to $158,859.

The School Board approved the raise Thursday with a 6-1 vote, with Lois Tarkanian dissenting.

Board president said the raise brings Cram in line with superintendents of the largest districts across the nation. Clark County has been ranked the ninth largest in the country, with 203,000 students.

"The salary didn't reflect the scope of work he was doing in a district this size," Brager said.

The board also wanted to raise the school chief's pay given that Cram will retire in 2000. The board has begun discussing how to attract top candidates to the job in a nationwide search.

"If you look at the business world and the education world, we are not at the top," Brager said. "We want to attract the best. The pay will make a difference."

The raise also will noticeably increase Cram's pension because state employee pensions are based on the employee's last three years of salary.
