Letter: Theory of GOP’s revenge motive doesn’t hold up
Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998 | 10:41 a.m.
He based his conclusion on a particular statement of Republican Rep. Howard Cobble: "It's a lot easier to throw grenades than to catch them." From this one aphorism alone, he has defied the rules of logic (and evidence) and jumped to the universal conclusion that the Republicans are in this for the "revenge." Mr. Levendosky, what about those Democrats who believe in the impeachment of the president? Are they part of this "plot?"
He also said: "The GOP's need for revenge was going to corner a Democratic president, any Democratic president..." Mr. Levendosky, there was no need to corner Clinton. The president served himself up on a platter when he lied in sworn testimony on multiple occasions and committed other serious offenses.
He further said: "If Congress were to begin impeachment hearings against every president who had illicit sexual affairs and lied about it, easily a third of all our presidents would have faced impeachment."
Mr. Levendosky, you omitted one substantial description about lying. It is "under oath"-- lying under oath.
