Free coffee will be available to drivers during the holiday travel season as the result of the Nevada Highway Patrol teaming with resorts in Primm and Mesquite.
The "Coffee Campaign" program kicks off Tuesday and will feature participation in Primm by the coffee shops and McDonald's at Primm Valley hotel-casino as well as Buffalo Bill's and Whiskey Pete's. In Mesquite, free coffee will be available at the Oasis hotel-casino.
About 100,000 accidents are caused nationally every year by drowsy drivers, according to the NHP. Trooper Scott Flabi, spokesperson for the NHP, said a recent study shows that those who have not slept in 24 hours are just as impaired behind the wheel as those who have a blood-alcohol content of about 0.10 percent.
"These numbers are especially significant for Las Vegas, due to the city's image of being open 24 hours and the large number of people who work non-traditional hours," Flabi said.
In addition to the NHP, sponsors of the program include the California Highway Patrol, the participating businesses, Sampsel Preston Photography, Las Vegas Color, Creative Graphics and Talent Group.
