Ethics hearing scheduled for Gates

The state Ethics Commission has scheduled a preliminary hearing for Jan. 14 regarding a complaint filed against County Commission Chairwoman Yvonne Atkinson Gates.
The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the first-floor board room of the Nevada State Contractor's Board, Building D, 4220 S. Maryland Parkway. Because it is only a preliminary hearing, to determine whether the complaint is valid, the proceedings will be closed to the public.
If "just and sufficient cause" is found during the preliminary hearing, a full and formal hearing with be scheduled by the Ethics Commission.
Las Vegas resident Robert Rose claims he filed the complaint after reading a Dec. 6 New York Times story in which Gates acknowledged using a polling service offered by Mirage Resorts Inc. The story pointed out that Atkinson Gates votes on important issues put forth by Steve Wynn, chairman of Mirage Resorts.
Atkinson Gates, who was found in violation of ethics laws this past summer, earlier told the Sun that she isn't concerned with Rose's filing and that she wasn't about to let it ruin her holidays.
