Lucent Technologies will be offering its HomeStar wiring system in the master-planned community. At least 35,000 future homes will have the wiring or an equivalent, with Lucent being the recommended provider, said Stew Gibbons, Summerlin senior vice president of community development.
Gibbons said many home buyers desire this wiring option.
"There's more and more interest from home buyers, from what I hear from builders," Gibbons said. "They like to know their homes are future-proof."
Last May, Howard Hughes announced a partnership with Sprint in which Sprint would offer fiber-optic service to 49,500 homes by 2015. The fiber-optic system allows high-speed computer modem service and is part of an electronic village Howard Hughes has dubbed "Summerlink."
Sprint fiber optics would be laid to the curb. Wiring inside the house would be HomeStar or an equivalent.
Lucent announced similar arrangements with developments in Gilbert, Ariz., and Miramar, Fla., in a deal estimated at $22 million.
