Brief: Hughes casino concept approved

Owned by the Howard Hughes Corp., plans call for an eight-story hotel, a 90,500-square-foot casino, and a 30,000-square-foot showroom, as well as restaurants and retail space.
Mark Brown, senior vice president at Hughes, said the specific plans on file are really just broad parameters that allow for significant design changes later in the process. At this point, it is too early to tell whether a resort will ever be developed at the site, Brown said.
"It may not ever happen," said Brown.
Hughes' gaming modus operandi is to acquire and zone sites for resort development, then put them out for bid to casino companies. The company used a similar plan for the site that is being developed as the Resort at Summerlin.
A previous Hughes plan for the Flamingo Road and Town Center Drive intersection was approved in 1996. Wednesday's action moves the location of the casino resort from the southeast corner of the intersection to the northwest corner.
