Letter: Welfare abolition would be harmful
Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 | 11:49 a.m.
I am an unemployed, single mom with two children who happens to receive food stamps. I have been unemployed since July and thanks to my food stamps we are able to eat three healthy meals a day, or more if we so choose.
When I did work, I still didn't make much and was still eligible for benefits. Now, my cash money from unemployment goes toward rent, power bill, doctor visits, asthma medication, clothes, shoes, school supplies for them and myself (I am currently attending CCSN).
So unless you know all the facts, be quiet and have compassion for those less fortunate. And if I choose to buy cigarettes with money (not food stamps because that is illegal for customers and vendors), it's my business.
