Sun Air to begin flights from Ely in February

Sun Air plans to offer flights from Yelland Field to Las Vegas, Reno, Elko and Salt Lake City beginning Feb. 1.
Scenic Airlines was originally awarded an Essential Air Service contract in July by the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide air service to the area.
However, when Scenic Airlines was later purchased by Eagle Canyon from Sky West, Eagle Canyon only bought the rights to the name and Grand Canyon tour routes.
Scottsdale Express purchased the remaining assets, including the EAS subsidy for Ely, and formed a new company called Sun Air.
Karen Rajala, director of the Economic Diversification Council, said no changes were made in the proposal the Transportation Department accepted from Scenic, other than the name change and the make of the airplanes.
Approval by the federal agency of those changes is still needed, she said.
