SUN STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
New UNLV football coach John Robinson hired two more assistant coaches over the weekend.
Gene Dahlquist, who most recently was the offensive coordinator at the University of Texas for six years (1992-97) under John Mackovic, has been hired by Robinson as a passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, while Cal State Northridge assistant Jeff Kearin has been hired to coach special teams and tight ends.
Kearin previously coached under Robinson for two years (1993-94) at USC where he also was an assistant under Larry Smith for two more years (1991-92).
Robinson said he picked Dahlquist because "the style of offense he runs is compatible with what I believe in."
The addition of Dahlquist and Kearin boosts Robinson's new staff to four. Previously, he had hired Joe Barry away from Northern Arizona as linebackers coach and retained wide recievers coach DelVaughn Alexander from former UNLV head coach Jeff Horton's staff.
Another potential new UNLV assistant, former Los Angeles Rams' All-Pro center and USC offensive line coach Doug Smith, is expected to tour Las Vegas today with his family before making a decision on whether to accept Robinson's offer to become the Rebel's new offensive line coach.
