Letter: Crisis would be not to impeach

Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 | 10:42 a.m.

Recently the U.S. Marine Corps disciplined two of its officers for speaking out publicly about President Clinton: Maj. Daniel Rabil and Maj. Sellers. These people spoke out, said what was on a lot of our minds: that Clinton is unfit for leadership and can no longer morally lead our troops.

I firmly believe if these majors in the Marine Corps are speaking out, there are thousands upon thousands in the military who share the same dislike for the president. But out of fear of reprisal they keep silent. Much like many people in society, they say what is only socially acceptable.

Many people have quipped the diatribe from James Carville -- four years, $40 million -- and trivialize the $43 million Clinton spent in China compromising national security issues. When put to the task of explaining what an impeachable offense is they say, "I don't know what an impeachable offense is, but this is not one of them."

Too many media sources have stated that the impeachment hearings will create a constitutional crisis, or it will have devastating results on our markets. I say, what about if it's the right thing to do? Not following the Constitution, I believe, is a crisis. Not ousting a president that breaks the oath of his office has effects on the society in whole.

I believe that people need to stand tall and firm about their misgivings on the Clinton White House. Don't be afraid to say things that are not popular. A few people spoke of such things in the mid to late 1700's and they created this nation.
