Man receives suspended sentence in beating death

Alejandro Avila pleaded guilty in Carson City District Court Nov. 3 to one count of gross misdemeanor conspiracy to commit burglary.
District Judge Michael Fondi imposed the one-year suspended jail sentence on Tuesday along with three years on probation and 200 hours of community service.
In addition, Avila is required to split restitution of $24,067.45 in medical and funeral costs with any of the 11 defendants who are convicted.
The plea bargain that resulted in three felony and one gross misdemeanor charges against Avila being dropped is conditioned on him testifying truthfully in the trial of the other defendants.
Resendiz and was beaten Aug. 23 in a North Carson Street motel room by a number of assailants and died of his injuries later that day.
Avila and 11 others were charged with murder with a deadly weapon, battery with a deadly weapon, burglary and conspiracy to commit battery with a deadly weapon.
The other 11 defendants are scheduled to be arraigned before Fondi Dec. 22.
