Letter: Hate GOP ideology, not GOP members
Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998 | 11:34 a.m.
I can't think of one program at the federal level to help disadvantaged people or the elderly that was initiated by the Republican Party. On the contrary, they have fought, blocked or obstructed every altruistic initiative proposed before and after adoption!
Neither do I think they are all racists, but they have been quick to appeal to racism for their political advantage. "The Southern Strategy," anti-immigration, anti-affirmative action, etc. They took over the South on the racial issue solely, mostly by opposing the civil rights and voting acts, and are now using affirmative action as a scapegoat to get working-class votes!
Neither do I hate Christians. In fact I have always been a staunch defender of religious freedom, but I do not believe religion should impose itself in government or impose its ideas on others. As far as the Christian Coalition goes, it is not a religious organization as much as it is a political wing of the Republican Party. If you will read its bylaws you see an exact duplicate of the conservative platform contained in them. Nowhere do they mention helping the "Least of Their Brethren," a cornerstone of true Christianity!
I personally am against abortion but do not wish to impose my view on others. In other words, I am pro-choice. Republicans have come down against choice and I do not believe it has any place in politics, anyway!
