Letter: Justifying spa retreat is laughable

Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 | 11:45 a.m.

It is "a rare chance for them to interact" said Karen Kavanau, director of the administration office of the court and investigator of this two-day, $10,000 "jaunt." She got her idea from her experience in private industry. Hello! Did anyone ever tell you this is not private industry.

We the people are paying for this and I for one do not think it is necessary for six judges and staff to learn the "decision-making process and general operation of the court" at a spa. This is why they made conference rooms. And besides, didn't the public elect these judges because we thought they already knew the decision-making process? What in heavens name has happened to common sense?

Kavanau also said holding this in Las Vegas would pose too many phone interruptions and Reno-Carson City is too cold. Talk about trying to justify the unjustifiable. Justice Bob Rose said you can't hold these sessions in urban areas because they can't keep the judge's attention. What are they going to do when they are on the bench?

Also it states that Justices Nancy Becker and Myron Leavitt don't want to move to Carson City until they are elected for six-year terms. Why did they run for Supreme Court when they knew the job was in Carson City.

When they come up for re-election in two years the hot topic will be Furnace Creek Inn, and they may not have to worry about moving at all. I am surprised there is not one justice that would say, "Hey, we better think twice about this."
