Baby sitter guilty of murdering child in her care
Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 | 2:14 a.m.
Alica Wegner, 34, faces 20 years in prison to life in prison without parole when she is sentenced Jan. 15.
Prosecutors contend Wegner, who ran a day-care facility out of her home, was the only one who could have caused the massive skull fracture that killed Kierra Harrison.
Wegner's attorneys presented her as a concerned baby sitter who tried to help a child in need.
Medical experts for the defense testified that the injury could have occurred two days earlier when Kierra was in the care of her parents. They said the child could have re-injured herself while staying with Wegner.
The child spent two days on life support before she was declared brain dead on March 5, 1997.
The defense said it would appeal the decision.
