Week One: Patterson’s Prep Football picks
Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998 | 11:17 a.m.
Cheyenne at Eldorado
The Scoop: Two of the teams expected to challenge for titles in their respective divisions lock up to open the season. The Sundevils have been working hard in the weight room and it showed in their scrimmage last weekend. But it could take more than size and strength to stop the Desert Shields' quick running attack.
The Pick: Cheyenne 28, Eldorado 17
Cimarron-Memorial at Chaparral
The Scoop: Another great early-season matchup between two of Las Vegas' top five clubs. Both teams have explosive offenses, so this game probably will be decided by the defenses. The Cowboys could have their hands full trying to run down Spartan tailback Arnold Parker.
The Pick: Cimarron 31, Chaparral 21
Silverado at Durango
The Scoop: Both teams would love to start the season off on the right foot, with the Trailblazers looking to prove last year wasn't a fluke and the Skyhawks hoping to put 1997 behind them. A big night from tailback Alex Dixon should put the hosts over the top.
The Pick: Durango 21, Silverado 10
Clark at Valley
The Scoop: A lot of people are counting the Vikings out in 1997, and a resounding win here would help dispel those notions. A Chargers' upset is unlikely, but not entirely out of the question.
The Pick: Valley 24, Clark 6
Bishop Gorman at Basic
The Scoop: This should be an evenly matched contest between two teams looking to improve on disappointing 1997s. The Gaels would love to give new coach Roger Whalen a win in his first game, but the Wolves may be the more improved team early.
The Pick: Basic 17, Gorman 14
Western at Green Valley
The Scoop: The next chapter in a developing rivalry. The Gators won the regular season matchup last year, but the Warriors came out on top when it counted most. Both clubs should be solid this fall, with the early edge going to a deeper Green Valley squad.
The Pick: Green Valley 24, Western 18
Las Vegas at Bonanza
The Scoop: The Bengals went winless in 1997, although most of their losses were by 10 or fewer points. Still, Las Vegas should be one of the top teams in the Sunrise this year, and would be a tough opener for anyone.
The Pick: Las Vegas 31, Bonanza 10
Rancho at Palo Verde
The Scoop: The Rams don't have many varsity players back, and the Panthers are making their varsity debut, so this one could be closer than expected. Palo Verde fans have been waiting a long time for this one, and their team won't let them down.
The Pick: Palo Verde 20, Rancho 17
Mojave at Pahrump
The Scoop: The Rattlers officially join the varsity ranks, albeit at an out-of-town opponent. Pahrump generally isn't a 3A power, so Mojave could make it 2-for-2 for the new kids on the block.
The Pick: Mojave 17, Pahrump 7
