Letter: Nothing private about the acts done in public part of building

Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998 | 10:09 a.m.

The only part of that building which is not public property is the private suites supplied for the use of the president and his family. As the chief executive officer of the United States, accommodations are provided because of the exigencies of the job.

Whatever the president or his family choose to do in that particular area is, and must be accepted as, his private affairs. But when he uses any part of the rest of the building for his own nefarious purposes, then it becomes totally public.

To use the most important office in the world for this kind of behavior is the equivalent of messing on the very doorstep of the United States, and this, if nothing else, would be grounds for firing any CEO of any business.

I suggest that Clinton take his own advice and put this all behind him, about 10,000 miles from Washington, and let us get on with the job of cleaning up his mess.
