Indian youths families express sympathy, call for calm

Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998 | 10:06 a.m.

The tribe members, all but one under age 21, have been charged with murder in the beating death of Sammy Resendez, 25, in a North Carson Street motel. Resendez was identified as one of the founding members of the Eastside Tokers, a predominantly Hispanic gang. But his brother says he had been mostly out of the gang for more than two years.

Rocky Boice Sr., Jack Malone and other parents of the youths facing murder charges said they wanted to extend their "most heartfelt sympathy" to the family and friends of Resendez.

"This incident was a tragic event and we cannot change what happened," they said. "We want to ensure that nothing else happens to cause more pain for all of the families."

Those arrested are Rocky Boice Jr., 19, Clinton, 15, and Jaron Malone, 17, Frederick Gene Fred, 19, Julian Cyrus Contreras, 15, David Moyle, 18, Jessica Evans, 20, and Lew Robert Dutchy, 24.

Investigators say they are still looking for at least one more person in the case.

The parents also denied allegations by sheriff's investigators that their children are involved in a gang.

Sheriff's investigators identified the accused as members of a gang headquartered on tribal land calling themselves the "Res Boys" or "Washoe Bloods."

The accused all have court-appointed lawyers and are scheduled to appear in Justice Court Sept. 4
